In The News of the Geek

as it turns cooler here in north florida (a brisk 91 degrees for the high today... brrr....) some new and entertaining things have caught my attention.
first and foremost, i am excited by this year's season finale of HBO's vampire rom-com series (yes, it is a comedy) True Blood.  i don't keep up with much television beyond The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson and Scrubs re-runs but True Blood, though lacking in some of the smut, blood and southern sweatiness of earlier seasons, fulfills most of my needs for drama, supernatural screams, interesting characters and, of course, hilarity.  The fourth season is wrapping up and Alan Ball has given fans the first ever Halloween episode of True Blood.  Because of the previously continuous timelines of prior seasons, True Blood's storyline has never taken place late enough in the year to allow for any episodes to take place during the month of October.  However, this season picks up roughly 14 months after the end of season 3 due to main character Sookie's accidental foray into fairyland. (lame, i know.)
i had always bemoaned the fact that the show never had a halloween episode because, as a long-time fan of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, those were always my favorites.  Any series built on a supernatural or remotely creepy premise should have an All Hallows Eve installment.  as if the visual stimulation of jack-o-lanterns, witches and ghosts weren't enough, Buffy's writers always managed to crank up the camp and allow characters to take a step back and laugh at themselves a little.
True Blood's halloween season finale should prove to be fitfully exciting and will, i am certain, end on a cliff hanger that will keep fans on the edge of their seats for the entire fall, winter and spring awaiting the return of a True geek favorite.

second on the list of things thrilling me beyond the usual raving madness of my day-to-day is that i hold in my hands Batman Detective Comics #1, IMHO the most interesting of the second round of titles in DC Comics' relaunch of The New 52
.
for those of you who either don't read comics or do and live under a rock, DC Comics is in the process of re-launching 52 of their most iconic titles including Batman, Superman, The Green Lantern and Justice League of America. Some fans are ecstatic while others are enraged.
my girlfriend, Tulpa Black, has been working in our favorite comic shop Universe Of Superheroes since our triumphant return to the Dirty South and has heard her fair share of complaints. more than one of the shop's faithful customers has decreed that he was furious and canceled every DC title in his substantial pull.
flipping through it's obvious DC hasn't chosen to banish advertising to the back of the book where it belongs and the re-designed Batmobile looks badass. however i'm not too sure about the Dark Knight's new costume tweaks.
although i've yet to

actually read my copy of Detective #1, i look forward to seeing what they trash and what they keep from the classic mythos of one of my favorite heroes.
